Every Crankshaft that comes through our shop will be inspected, disassembled, glass bead blasted, cleaned, phased, reassemled with all Japanese Bearings, trued, welded, and final trued to no more than 0.001".
Lower rod pin: Lower rod pins on crankshafts are the wear item that is only able to be seen when the crank is partially disassembled. On these pins, the smallest pit of corrosion will open up as time goes on and eventually will cause lower rod bearing failure. Most crankshafts do not have a replaceable lower rod pin from the factory, but the aftermarket has come to the rescue with aftermarket Web kits that once installed, allow these lower rod pins to be replaced multiple times.
Interference fit: One of the most important aspects of rebuilding a multi-piece, press-fit crankshaft is the interference fit amongst all of the components. In the most basic terms, for the parts to fit together and stay together in perfect alignment, each male part must be slightly larger in diameter than the female part it is fitted with. Most OEM and certain aftermarket crankshafts of this style can be rebuilt approximately 3 times before the interference fit is too weak. Some aftermarket crankshafts (Hot Rods for example), have too weak of an interference fit even when brand new. This is why we are not able to accept Hot Rods Crankshafts as cores for rebuilds. Another example of a crankshaft with a weak interference fit is the OEM Kawasaki 440/550. Sometimes they are not good for even one rebuild, and we have to supplement the core provided with other core parts in our inventory. Any Seadoo crankshaft on the other hand, has an extremely tight interference fit, and typically don't even need to be welded in the truing process.
Disassembly: When it comes to breaking down all of these different styles of crankshaft, we are constantly machining new press plates to hold the crankshafts properly. It is very important to take them apart in a way the does not weaken the interference fit by oblonging the female components.
Phasing: Phasing is a term that applies to multiple cylinder crankshafts. It is based on the fact that there are 360 degrees in one rotation. On a 2 cylinder engine, cylinder 1 will typically fire exactly 180 degrees apart from cylinder 2. And on a 3 cylinder, that degree of rotation will be 120 degrees from cylinder to cylinder. The order that they are phased in and the firing order vary from engine to engine, but this gives you the basic idea.
Assembly Tooling: This may be the most important part of rebuilding a multiple cylinder crankshaft and doing it well. We have made a very large investment in our assembly fixtures that assure the components are 100% perfectly phased appropriately for their application. This tooling is proprietary and no one will ever see it in any photo or video we produce. Simply put, it makes it impossible for the crankshaft to go together in any way other than phased perfectly.
Truing: Truing is a part of the process throughout the entire assembly of the crankshaft. Most importantly it is done on the Mag and PTO end of the crankshaft where your flywheel and drive coupler will be attached respectively. Any OEM crankshaft will be no more than 0.003" out of true when brand new. We up that standard to no more than 0.001" for any crankshaft we service. For reference, 0.003" is the thickness of a human hair, so as the expression goes... we are splitting hairs.

Rod Modification: Typically we will only have to modify the large end of rods on certain stroker applications. Usually on long rod Yamaha based strokers from +5mm up.
